Summary of Information and Responsibilities for Volunteer Coaches
Sport: Lacrosse
The City of Alexandria in conjunction with the Alexandria Lacrosse Club, offers a lacrosse program for youth between the ages of 6 and 14. The intent is to teach the basic skills of lacrosse. Coaches are needed at all levels. A brief summary of the requirements for a volunteer coach follows:
Season:
• Practice starts in mid-February and goes to mid-June
Time Demand:
• 2-3 practices a week (1-2 hours per practice)
• 1 game per week on Saturdays (boys) or Sunday (girls) (1 ½ hours per game)
• 1 hour of preparation/contact time per week
Skill Needed:
• Some experience with lacrosse preferred but not necessary
• Coaching experience preferred but not required at younger age levels
• Generally three coaches per team are needed
Coaching Applications:
• Application to be submitted to the Department of Recreations, Parks, and Cultural Activities
• Criminal background check conducted
Basis for Team:
• Divided by age and skill level by the Alexandria Lacrosse Club
• City-wide teams formed
• Teams play in the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League
Practice Sites:
• Fields in the City of Alexandria
Competition Sites:
• Home fields in the City of Alexandria; away games in Northern VA
Equipment needed:
• No special equipment needed
• Coaching Shirts/Fleeces/hats provided by Alexandria Lacrosse Club
Training Requirements:
• National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) courses provided by the Department of Recreation
• US Lacrosse level 1 on-line course & certificate (fee paid for by club)
Clinics:
• Pre-season coaches’ meeting as required by the Alexandria Lacrosse Club and the Department of Recreation, Parks prior to the beginning of the season
Rewards:
• Contributing to the life experience of a child by teaching lacrosse, participating in a team sport, and developing sportsmanship and character
• Coaches jersey and hat
• Registration fee waived for your child
